A few studies have examined the changes in substance- and behavior-related “wanting” and “liking” of human subjects, the key properties of Incentive Sensitization Theory (IST). To study neural substrates of ‘wanting’, we use psychological and neurobiological techniques that isolate incentive salience from other psychological functions such as reinforcement learning or pleasure ‘liking’.
